The best way to know if you want the Ultimate edition or not is by looking at the Comparing Windows Vista Home Premium edition with Business edition, If you need both then you should buy the Ultimate edition, If you need none of the features listed on that page, then you can buy the Basic edition, and if you need only one of them, you know what edition you need.

Windows Vista Pages The Vista Checklist

Why - Why not Vista Ultimate

windows vista ultimate editionWindows Vista Ultimate has everything in every other edition of Microsoft Windows Vista, except for one, Like all open for retail editions ULTIMATE comes with 5 years support, while enterprise comes with 10.

In this (windows vista ultimate review), i will try to put you in the picture since not everything is as obvious as it seems, Microsoft has not yet finished Vista's development as you will see later on this page, things like WinFS have not arrived yet, So please read on, and if after this page you still have not reached to a conclusion on weather you want the ultimate edition or not, Proceed to the comparison page

So, i should get Ultimate edition right ? Wrong... Unless you already need the ultimate edition, You should either get Home Premium or Business, then if you need the Ultimate, Windows and for the first time allows you to upgrade between editions WindowsAnytimeUpgrade.exe)! Also Vista Ultimate edition comes with a price tag you should be willing to overlook only if

1- You have allot of money and the $380 are nothing to you (or $250 if you intend to buy the upgrade). (Click here to buy)
2- You are a professional that needs to have 1 computer to do both his entertainment and his work (example of entertainment is media center, and of business is remote desktop)
3- You are a computer enthusiast, a geek, who can not afford not to have the best one because it would not look good (even though it is very unlikely anyone will ask you, but you can take no risk)
4- You need features only available in ultimate and enterprise and you are not entitled to buying the enterprise edition (since enterprise edition is not available for everyone to buy), these features are

Feature only in Ultimate and enterprise editions

  Notes XP's capability HB HP B U E
Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption A useful feature that protects your data when windows is not in charge of the disks (more) Third party encryption tools can securely encrypt your data, Convenience may be the only issue here home basic home premium business Ultimate enterprise
Support for simultaneous installation of multiple user interface languages   Like the name implies, to be able to install more than one language to the interface (More) Not possible home basic home premium business Ultimate enterprise
All worldwide user interface languages (36 languages total) available   Having the choice from 36 languages for the user interface (More) You needed a localized edition of Windows XP, usually had inconveniences when it comes to updates (delayed) for those editions, In vista Binarys are separated from language files home basic home premium business Ultimate enterprise
Subsystem for UNIX-based applications  (SUA) Allows Unix applications to be run on windows, Success depends on application since it still uses the windows kernel here (More) Available with SFU that shipped from Microsoft for windows XP ! home basic home premium business Ultimate enterprise

For a more complete comparison between vista editions you will need to see the comparison page, the comparison page is done in the easiest way to comprehend we found possible, We have officially identified a problem with the human brain in easily understanding comparisons with many variables and many compared objects, what we still did not figure out is who's brain is the one lacking capability, yours or ours.

NOTE: We found that the easiest way to chose your edition is not by seeing a comparison of all 4 editions, But rather compare Home Premium to Business edition, you will find out how that comparison serves the purpose on that page.

So what else is different in ultimate

Windows vista Ultimate edition is entitles you to windows vista ultimate extras, the extras are something you get over the internet, Nothing serious in Ultimate extras, Wallpapers, screen savers, Supplemental Utilities, more games, Media player add ones and visualization, etc... But we will not emphasize on these extras in this review, rather we will look for more of the serious features (simply because we don't know what Microsoft is going to deliver).

Vista took 7 Years of development, not because it should, but because the teams were busy fixing all those microsoft bugs and security issues in XP *(i am sure vista will have as many bugs, but only time will unveil that), So not every feature was ready in time for shipping, Some of the features will follow in the updates !

The ones we know about are...

WinFS ( Windows File System ? NO, Windows Future Storage) - Windows Future Storage (WinFS) should have shipped with Vista, it was the initial design, But vista took too long to hit the shelves, Microsoft had to drop it because they needed to save on development time, and as always with microsoft, The looks come first (excuse me, i can't seem to get over my Linux fan attitude) . To learn more about the unfinished WinFS, read the article named WinFS (Windows Future Storage) - Advancing the NTFS (New Technology File System) up to now, we don't know what versions of windows vista this will ship with.

Animated Desktop support / Motion Desktop- like the name suggests, this feature will allow you to have animation on your desktop, Something i already do with InterVideo WinDVR 3, in fact with this software i can watch TV rather than wallpaper, But let us not go off topic now, Vista should be able play animation in the background, i was hoping it would be video (WMV (Microsoft's babe), mpeg, etc...) but i expect (GIF, XAML, Windows Media Photo (wdp), Anyway, Video would be a memory hog (or a disk read hog) depending on the way video is used. We will have to wait and see about this one. Where are the good old active desktop days (1998).

As mentioned before, Ultimate edition does NOT have any feature that is no where else (except for ultimate extras that are no big deal) , but rather the edition that has all the features in all other editions.

Do you write often? One would imagine that a person who does so, would at least have a basic grasp of spelling and grammar. Both of which, I'm sorry to say, in your case, are atrocious. I'll wager you're not capable of finding all of these mistakes, on this page alone! I understand that your site is content driven, so please make some effort to ensure that said content is approaching readable.

Can anyone please explain to me the exact purpose of releasing FIVE FREAKING VERSIONS OF AN OS AT THE SAME TIME!?!?! O Microsoft, how you continue to increase your production of screw-ups.

A nice concise article here. Until now I wondered whether it would be worth trying ultimate over home premium (assuming I can get Vista installed at all, as the installer won't let me install in a partition that it just formatted! And if I do succeed, I wonder if it will be capable of enticing me off of Suse Linux, which with XGL and compiz, has just as good eye-candy as Vista. Ignore the pedant under the soubriquet "concerned with the plight of writers", one who evidently has nothing better to do than complain over grammatic trifles, no doubt sitting at his computer with his lugubrious frame hunched over the keyboard, scrutinising every word with his dyspeptic eyes, rather than observing their collective meaning. And even worse, such people, who cannot contain their vitriol, cannot even practise what they preach - you should say "I'll wager that...". I'll wager that there are fewer mistakes in this article than most leading newspapers print every day.

I agree with "Concerned with the plight of writers." Sure, some typos can be ignored. But when there is atrocious mutilation of the english language, it is time to, at a minimum, have it reviewed by a primate before posting it for the world to read. Ignore "Long live Linux!" who evidently has nothing better to do than whine about the OS that has is having trouble installing, and spending so much time using a thesaurus to impress us in defending an illiterate person. Well... he is a Linux fanboy so that explains his mental instability.

Okay, you guys don't see the point of the article. He's not "atrocious"--something you'd say while sipping tea and giggling over a well made smoke ring from your Cuban cigars--when it comes to grammar. He explained some stuff, and gave you information. That's all that he wanted to do, he doesn't need the grammar police kicking his door down just so they feel their dick is bigger than it really is. Read, understand, and apply. Simple as that.

The language packs are available in the Ultimate edition which to me ARE a big deal. I can buy the Chinese version for 2099RMB and install the English language pack and then I can set my desktop to English and my wife's to Chinese. The English version round these parts costs 50% extra at 3500RMB. Plus I can try some other language versions at no extra cost.
