Vista comes with Parental Controls, But not the best parental control service you can get, Parental control in windows vista is not as advanced as that of norton internet security for example, While the later has a list of websites that keeps everything but the bad websites open, Windows vista parental control blocks everything but a few websites you allow thus limiting the users clean web experience
So Even with vista, you will need a better parental control solution, but if you do not have the budget for that, this may be a useful service
More advanced parental controls are available on the market, but they are pretty expensive

This results in such a large amount of sites / sections of pages being blocked that it's totally useless.
Moreover, while PDFs are truly "downloads", they are commonplace on the web today. Vista is blocking them as well, since I requested to block downloaded. Why not provide the admin with a way to define exceptions?
Clearly, Vista's Parental Controls is in its infancy stage, as it is feature-poor and obviously not working as one would expect (or perhaps it's working as one SHOULD expect from Microsoft). |

A person that's MYY AGE shouldn't even be thought about to have parental controls on the computer. | Alright, so the gist of the problem with this feature is that I can spend an afternoon doing research on world history or classic cars on Wikipedia, and half that stuff would be censored by Vista parental controls. 'Cause obviously, cars and history are really inappropriate, like porn or something. I go to Google Images and look up 'guns,' 'penis,' 'vagina,' weed,' and 'cocaine,' lo and behold, in plain sight--guns, penises, vaginas, doobies and cokelines. It blocks totally acceptable material and lets the stuff that needs to be blocked go under the radar completely. My father was real naive to think it'd help me resist my teenage temptations. (Not that I wouldn't do so myself.) |

| Okay, so I've been reading the comments below and even thought I know this won't change anything, I wanted to state my case. A person that's MYY AGE shouldn't even be thought about to have parental controls on the computer. It's not like I'm some creepy anti-social person that would be prone to looking up porn all the time. Mainly the websites I go on are Facebook and music websites. With Parental Controls for Vista, however, my iTUNES won't load the store, my FROSTWIRE barely works on occasion, and if I wanted to look up something on MYSPACE Music I couldn't because for some reason it's in my "BLOCK" list. All I have to say is WTF Microsoft. You should only have parental controls for people the ages of 12 and under. I think I'm a responsible young adult to NOT have this on my damn computer. |

| Alright, so the gist of the problem with this feature is that I can spend an afternoon doing research on world history or classic cars on Wikipedia, and half that stuff would be censored by Vista parental controls. 'Cause obviously, cars and history are really inappropriate, like porn or something. I go to Google Images and look up 'guns,' 'penis,' 'vagina,' weed,' and 'cocaine,' lo and behold, in plain sight--guns, penises, vaginas, doobies and cokelines. It blocks totally acceptable material and lets the stuff that needs to be blocked go under the radar completely. My father was real naive to think it'd help me resist my teenage temptations. (Not that I wouldn't do so myself.) |
