Windows Vista Ready Boost
Ready Boost is a feature that allows windows Vista to utilize flash memory to serve as one more level of caching to boost your system performance.
Your highly likely to be deployed software and data used to be cached on RAM only, Now Windows vista can add 1 more level of caching, Flash memory so that your disk can have more time to read its own data, It is not only the speed of flash that makes the efficiency, But when much data is ordered at once, the flash disk will possibly have part of that data, so the hard disk's burden is lowered to simply getting the missing things, every such process involves overhead from the CPU (to organize the process, but we are still trying to find how much that overhead really is (should be little compared to today's processors).
SAMSUNG is already delivering 4GB flash disks (Of the size of a hard disk), and can be connected to Ultra ATA, for under $100 the SSD (solid State Disk) should ship not long after Vista starts shipping.
Related to this is probably SuperFetch memory-management, But sticking to ReadyBoost for now, Flash disks can be 1 to 5 times faster than traditional hard disks, It is notable that the real difference lies in disk seek time elimination and not faster data read.
Since flash disks are expensive, it is going to be a while until we see a solid state flash hard disk of many GBs, but for now, we should be able to be happy about Hybrid disks, A hybrid disk has flash space and the traditional cobalt-based alloy disks (Yes, they stopped using Rust (ferric oxide) long ago).
So, will this invention make my computer crazy fast ?
The answer is simple, In theory YES, in practice, we have not had a chance to try it, But we are doing out best to get our hands on one so we can go on with the article.
Whenever we have more info on the topic, we will come here to keep you updated.
