WinFS (Windows Future Storage) - Advancing the NTFS (New Technology File System)
WinFS ( Windows File System ? NO, Windows Future Storage) - Windows Future Storage (WinFS) should have shipped with Vista, it was the initial design, But vista took too long to hit the shelves, Microsoft had to drop it because they needed to save on development time, and as always with microsoft, The looks come first (excuse me, i can't seem to get over my Linux fan attitude) .
WinFS is not a File System on its own, WinFS runs on NTFS under windows vista (hopefully and XP but i doubt it), Windows Future Storage utelises relational database model to create sophisticated indexes of a varietuy of files on your system, your emails, your images, your office documents, etc... and creats XML metadata from your documents.
WinFS was supposed to ship with Vista, but it did not,
What is in this more than the casual index my files functionality is that it will be relating your data together, and it would do it efficiently.
Hoping that microsoft will have a bit less bugs and security flaws in Vista than in XP, this feature should be ready soon and delivered via Windows Update (the internet)
Also, Microsoft did deliver some of the features wished for in WinFS in VISTA but on NTFS, Click here to see what changed in NTFS
