All of the backup features are available with 3rd party programs... such as Seagate's "BounceBack Express"
From: Al Bashye Subject: Vista
I really wanted to buy a copy of XP Home, but found that Vista Basic was on offer for less. I don't give a damn for transparent nonsence, all I wanted was to be able to run Photoshop Elements version 4, which won't run on my beloved Windows 2000 (no bloody activation !)
From: Marc Subject: DVD drive & compatibility
My dvd drive no longer recognises disks, it just asks me what I want to do with the ´blank disc´. I can open a player play a dvd but that is not a solution for software installations. Also the swindle of ´vista ready´ software is a money-making exercise.

I tried watching a dvd on windows basic. It wouldn't work! You have to find the codecs to play dvds yourself.
From: cherie Subject: basic vs. premium

NOTE: You can save up to $160 dollars if you do not want tech. support from Microsoft (You will get windows updates), To see how, Visit the checklist page.
Windows Vista OEM is meant to be cheaper since there is no tech support, But also installs on 1 computer only and can not be transferred to another computer
